Kesteven Ladies rugby play matches against Boston and Ashfield in a busy week
A busy week for Kesteven Ladies has seen the side follow up an excellent cup display by recording their third league win of the season.
They faced Boston last Wednesday night in the Lincolnshire Cup and produced an outstanding display in the 5-14 defeat against a team currently playing two leagues above.
The first few minutes showed what a tough, fast paced game this would be and the ladies had to be switched on and step up to stand a chance against their opposition who have recorded back-to-back promotions.
Kesteven dominated possession throughout the game but, despite several entries to the Boston 22, could not convert this to points in the first half.
A change of tactic in the second half and a show of great hands got the ball to Phoebe Beaumont who crossed the line to narrow the scoreline.
Kesteven dug deep in defence and continued to dominate the territory but unfortunately couldn't get over the line to secure a victory.
For their second game of the week, the ladies travelled to Ashfield on Sunday to compete in their fourth league game of the season.
A shaky start meant the ladies struggled to find their feet in the game and they let the home team come at them metre after metre.
Despite this, the ladies gained some momentum and set the platform to allow a strong carry from Hermione Farmer to open the scoring.
The home side fought back and lack of line speed from Kesteven meant they made their way through the defensive line without much trouble, scoring twice in quick succession.
After a long run from Kesteven’s own half, Amy Brumhead offloaded the ball which was knocked on. The resulting scrum allowed a minute of calm in a chaotic game and forced errors which led to a turnover allowing Lilliemae Reid to complete the first half scoresheet.
Half time brought some renewed energy and the ladies pulled themselves together to start a charge to try and turn the game around but, despite this, Ashfield managed to cross the line extending their lead further.
Tired bodies or not, the ladies knew they had to dig deep to salvage the game.
The next score on the board was indeed for Kesteven and, after her second strong run of the game, Brumhead crossed the line and added the conversion to make the scores level.
This built some momentum and, after the next restart, Kesteven again took possession and linked several phases before getting the ball wide to debutant Frankie Needs for her second touch of the game and this time there was no stopping her as she charged up the wing to score in the corner.
The ladies had found their flow and were taking the ball forward once again, spreading the play from one side of the pitch to the other.
They capitalised on their overlap allowing Megan Alderton to score under the posts with the conversion added to bring the final score to 17-29.
The ladies' next home game is on Sunday against Scunthorpe in the first round of the NLD Cup.
