Grantham Town bosses get on with the job after players depart

Grantham Town’s joint managerial pair this week seemed non-plussed over the departure of striker Paul Grimes and goalie Dan Haystead to former boss Jimmy Albans’s Belper Town.

The Gingerbreads agreed terms for the pair after the bottom of the league side made an offer which co-boss Wayne Hallcro described as “a good deal for the club”.

Grimes played his last game for Grantham on Tuesday night, whilst Haystead had already been replaced by Jake Turner who has returned to The Meres from Rainworth to slip on the number one shirt once again and add to his previous 26 appearances for the Gingerbreads.

Grimes had only scored three goals in 14 appearances this season and is still to be replaced by Hallcro and Adam Stevens.

Stevens said they would just get on with it: “Players moving out and new ones coming in is just part of the managers’ job.”

One new face to come off the bench for Grantham against Holbeach United on Tuesday was Jake Wholey.

Wholey is a 21-year-old left back who began his youth career at Leicester City before moving on to Notts County for three years, and then Nottingham Forest. He is at The Meres for a trial period.

The Gingerbreads progressed to the semi-finals of the Lincolnshire Senior Shield with a 2-0 win over Holbeach, and put in another sterling performance to overturn a 2-0 deficit on Saturday, eventually drawing 3-3 after King’s Lynn Town scored late on.

Grantham’s game tomorrow could be in jeopardy, depending on the quantity of snow at Workington and/or the chance of a frozen pitch.

Following Workington’s four-game winning streak, defensive uncertainty appears to be creeping into the Reds’ mix and they suffered a 3-2 defeat at Ashton United on Saturday.

Their previous three league games saw victories against Rushall Olympic 3-2 at home, Nantwich Town 3-2 away, and Whitby Town 3-0 at home.

Recently returned to the club is striker Alex Newby, on loan till the end of the season from Barrow.

Wide midfielder Scott Allen has renewed his contract with Workington. Gareth Arnison and Matt Tymon are the on-form goalscorers.
