Grantham’s Mayhem at the Meres boxing show labelled ‘great success’
Carl Greaves has labelled his return to Grantham a ‘great success’.
The boxing promoter put on his first show in the town since 2015 on Saturday, a card showcasing up and coming fighters from the region.
Mayhem at the Meres, held at the Meres Leisure Centre, pulled in an impressive crowd during holiday and festival season, which coincided with the beginning of the Euros.
“We pulled it out the bag and the main thing is it was a fantastic night of boxing,” said Greaves.
“We’ve had really good feedback and everyone really enjoyed the show.
“Everyone was happy, so all in all it was a great success.
“It’s a lovely venue, fantastic set up. We’re really pleased with the venue and I definitely will be going back, just not as long of a gap this time.”
Topping the bill was Boston’s former Commonwealth and British light heavyweight champ Callum Johnson, who secured a 40-35 points success against Viktar Chvarkou.
Newark’s Tom Cowling stopped James Todd in the fourth to set up a fight with Troy Coleman for the vacant Midlands middleweight title and Johnson’s cousin Thomas Pogson secured the first stoppage of his four-bout career after dropping Joe Ducille twice.
Another young Bostonian Harvey Elding also added a tick to his win column with a 60-55 victory over Mexico’s former world title challenger Erik Omar Lopez.
Wisbech's Ryan Williams defeated Doncaster's Jake Smith 40-35, who did well after shaking off a first-round knockdown.
A third win of the year was secured by Grimsby's Shaydon Walmsley. He recorded a 39-37 win against the durable Martin Shaw.
A 60-54 from referee Ryan Churchill's scorecard gave Thetford's Roni Dean victory over Amy Greatorex while Newark’s Jade Grierson secured her fourth victory with a 101-second stoppage success against Marija Zivkovic.
