Sudbrook Moor Golf Club round-up

Levi Desmond is packing in a run of successes as part of the World Amateur ranking.

An early May 72-hole scratch competition in the Danny Willett Salver included his new amateur course record over the second day at Yorkshire's Lindrick Golf Club.

This was in the fourth round and clinched an excellent overall second place finish for the Sudbrook Moor golfer.

Lincolnshire's amateurs were on top form that weekend with the top three names being home grown.

Credit to another golfer who started his career at Sudbrook Moor, Jack Diment, who finished in third place.

Sudbrook Moor's Craig Toyne enjoyed a great first day and a creditable final placing from a field of 72.

Desmond was soon back on the road to Penwortham, Lancashire, for another 36 hole event.

There he won the beautiful Rose Bowl Open with scores of 68 and a dazzling 65, amounting to 11 shots under par.

These achievements add further points for Desmond in the Northern Order of Merit.

England Golf has been encouraging the inclusion of nine-hole competitions into club calendars as they are suitable for all.

Sudbrook Moor's summer series of nine-hole stablefords is now in its fourth year and growing in popularity year by year.

They are particularly ideal for members who are pressed for time while, for the new golfers, they are a great introduction to competitions.

It gives encouragement to come and learn the process of on-line competition entry and payment, filling in and returning a scorecard, and enjoying the social side of playing with new-found friends and, at the same time, getting to grips with the golf rules.

Each month, the front and back nine holes are alternated to give equal competition practice over the whole course. As the days lengthen, the working golfer can fit in an evening nine-hole round.

This month's winner was Lee Gayton who carded a super 21 stableford points, playing from an index of 19.6, with a half handicap allowance, to the back nine pins.

Lee also claimed the entire two's sweep with his birdie on hole number 16, which was also a fine way to add to that total of 21 points.

Equal runners-up were Andrew Dolby and Sheila Nelson with 19 points. Newcomers to the series were Phil Roys, Courtney Sharples, David Swaithe, Phil Hilton and Bryan Clark.
