Grantham Running Club members take part in the Trident Sports Mallard Cake Dash at Westwood Lakes in Wyberton

Eleven Grantham Running Club members headed to Westwood Lakes in Wyberton to take part in the Trident Sports Mallard Cake Dash.

Conditions were good and both the 5k and 10k routes this year started outside the race headquarters, giving a much better experience for both runners and spectators alike.

Runners had to weave around the lodges and lakes before completing a loop of both Jenny’s and Westgate Woods, and for the 10k runners, an out and back before heading to the finish line, writes Zoe Wragg.

Nine club members took part in the 10k, with Gavin Potter being first back for Grantham.

He finished in an impressive time of 39:42, ranking him in the top 10 finishers, crossing the line in ninth place.

Gav was pleased with his own performance and thought everyone from the club did really well.

He was also pleasantly surprised by the medal quality and thought the overall atmosphere was brilliant.

Next was James McMullen who completed the course in 44:03.

James was thankful that it was nice and flat and, despite feeling tempted to switch to the 5k race halfway through, he dragged himself to the 10k finish.

Despite a recent injury, Russell Maksymiw was pleased to finish in 47:05. He really enjoyed the route and felt the event was well organised.

Next over the line was Daniel Wallace who was delighted to achieve a new personal best, coming in at 49:27.

Melissa Winter was the first GRC lady back in the 10k, finishing in 54:42.

She was shortly followed by Kate Thompson, who had a busy weekend of racing having also completed the Rutland 10k on the Friday night, and was therefore happy to comfortably finish in 54:59.

Catherine Wallace was the next lady back, finishing in a time of 01:01:03. Emma Hopkinson completed the 6.2 miles in 01:08:15.

In the 5k race, there were just two competitors from GRC but Sam Dodwell and Zoe Wragg both managed to bag podium spots, placing second in their male and female categories.

Sam crossed the line in 21:10 and Zoe followed in 24:38 which she was pleased with compared to her recent performances.
