Gingerbreads striker completes clean sweep at end-of-season awards

Grantham Town have held their end-of-season awards and one name has swept the board.

As their league season was expunged with 10 matches remaining, the awards were aptly named “the 2019/20 season that never was.”

Thirty-five year old Craig Westcarr completed a clean sweep of the awards. These accolades included the Frank Baxter Cup, voted for by fans, as well as the Jack Macartney Award.

The Gingerbreads striker, who joined from Matlock Town in 2019, has 18 goals in 31 appearances this season.

Craig said: “I’m obviously really grateful to be awarded the Frank Baxter Cup, to be voted a supporters favourite is the top prize you can get.

“The supporters have been great all season, even when things weren’t going the way we wanted. They deserve a good season whenever that starts
again.

“The hat trick at Lancaster and the strike at home to Stalybridge are the ones that stand out.”

Following on from the awards, Chairman Darren Ashton said: “From what I saw before coming chairman and knowing his playing career, Craig really is a stand out player.

“His goals were a big part of the season. I’m delighted the supporters recognised him too, that’s a great award to be receiving. When we’re out of lockdown we’ll get the trophy to him.”

Finally, the George and Marge Freeston Award went to PA announcer Rhino for his dedication to the club and hard work in his matchday role.

Darren continued: “I really love the idea of the George and Marge Freeston Award. When we got involved I was made aware of what George and Marge did for the club and the regard they are still held in. Rhino works hard on a match day and thoroughly deserved the accolade.”

Now that the end- of-season awards are complete and there is no threat of relegation, Town’s attentions have turned to the 2020/21 campaign, whenever it may commence.

Regarding the vote for the club’s new kit, Darren said:”We need to be ready for when we’re told the 2021 season is to start.

“Getting the kit ready is a job we can do while we’re keeping safe at home. We had a various number of options and we were able to whittle them down to the three we’ve shown the supporters.

“We wanted to give them the opportunity to have their say. We’ll look at the results of the poll and make our decision.”
