Anglian Water confirms that Holbeach sink hole was caused by burst water main

A sink hole which resulted in a town street being closed was caused by a burst water main.

Police were forced to shut Park Road in Holbeach two weeks ago for safety reasons after the large hole appeared in the pavement.

Anglian Water confirmed a week after the incident that the sink hole had been caused by a burst main - despite initially telling us that their teams were not involved in the Park Road incident.

Holbeach has been plagued with sink holes in recent years with a number of issues in Boston Road South - which is again seeing some sinking.

A spokesman for Anglian Water says it regularly maintains its network in the Holbeach area.

She said: “We investigated the sinkhole on Park Road and found that it was caused by a burst water main. This was promptly repaired by our repair team, and the road has now been put back to how it was.

“In terms of the water infrastructure in Holbeach, our teams regularly service and maintain our assets to ensure they’re in good working order for our residents, both in Holbeach and across our region.

“We have teams working 24 hours a day to keep taps running and toilets flushing, so if a customer ever needs us, they can speak to our contact centre on 03457 145 145.”

Anglian Water and Lincolnshire County Council have spent thousands of pounds on Boston Road South in recent years trying to resolve the problem with the sink hole, which included relining the sewer.

Concerns were raised about a significant dip which returned last year prompting concerns from locals.

While repairs were undertaken at this site, a further dip is now being seen further along Boston Road South, near the Branch Bros depot.

The sink hole in nearby Park Road appeared after a lorry reversed over the path, leaving behind the significant hole.

This latest issue has now been repaired.
