Drink driver flipped his car at Holbeach St Johns after heading to pub to make friends
An ‘isolated’ man who headed to the pub to make friends ended up flipping his car and losing his driving licence.
Twenty-eight-year-old Daniel John Lyons pleaded guilty to drink driving at Joy’s Bank, Holbeach St Johns, when he appeared in court on Wednesday (August 28).
Prosecutor Jade Salter told Boston Magistrates police had received a report of the collision at 11.20pm on February 8.
“They found a green Ford Fiesta on its roof with the passenger and driver doors open,” she said.
“At 11.33pm the defendant identified himself as the driver of the vehicle.
“He said he had collided with a sign before the car tipped.”
A blood test revealed Lyons had 133 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.
In mitigation, Phillipa Chatterton explained Lyons had been suffering with mental health problems and had moved from his Essex home to live with his sister in Spalding for ‘family support’.
“He felt isolated as he only knew his sister and her family,” Miss Chatterton continued.
“He wanted to socialise so he got his darts and headed to the pub.
“A combination of drink, the weather and and the fact he didn’t know the roads led to the collision.”
Lyons - who has secured a factory job after moving back to Essex to live with his parents - was banned from the roads for 16 months, which will be reduced by 16 weeks if he completed the drink driver rehabilitation course.
He was also fined £350, and ordered to pay a £140 surcharge and £85 costs.
