Holbeach Parish Council raises concerns over visibility at Saturday Bridge

Fears have been raised about the visibility around a notorious crossroads.

Holbeach Parish Council has been calling for action to be taken for sometime at the nearby Saturday Bridge junction.

Last week Coun Paul Redgate called for the new Reform-led Lincolnshire County Council to take a look at this crossroads with other accident blackspots in South Holland, including Hulls Drove at Crowland.

The parish council’s previous calls to have the speed limit reduced from 60mph on the B1168 Raven’s Gate, which leads up to the crossroads, were listened to and this was slashed to 50mph.

A statement from the council said: “The committee is still very concerned about this junction, visibility is an issue along with the speed of vehicles traveling in the Holbeach to Holbeach St Johns direction and vice versa.

“The junction is a busy junction and becomes even busier when there are issues on the A17 and additional vehicles use this route. It is also used by heavy lorries as a cut through between the A17 and Peterborough.

“The council would welcome any safety improvements and have been asking for this for some time.”

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership has recorded eight slight injury collisions at the crossroads over the last three years.

The partnership says it has undertaken a number of actions at the junction, which includes the installation of vehicle activated signs.

It said: “Speed survey has been previously undertaken in 2023 when a 60 limit was present, with the average speed of traffic found to be 42mph and 0.3% of vehicles exceeding the speed limit at a point where enforcement action would be taken.

“A new 50 limit was implemented in 2024, and the junction has had a redesign with new yellow backed signs installed to improve the warning on approach to the junction.

“The road surface has been changed on the approach to the junction.”
