RAF Cranwell Squadron Leader Sharon Ingle, of Holbeach, speaks of surprise at featuring in New Year’s Honours list
An RAF officer has spoken of her pride – and surprise – at being named in the New Year’s Honours list.
Squadron leader Sharon Ingle, 44, who grew up in Holbeach, will receive a Member of the Order of the British Empire and found out the news during a phone call just after Christmas.
An instructor based at RAF Cranwell, Sqn Ldr Ingle led the Commonwealth liaison team, which was responsible for looking after the Commonwealth personnel who attended Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, her state funeral and the coronation of King Charles III last year.
She was then invited to a special reception hosted by HM King Charles III and Queen Camilla in recognition of her contribution to the three historic royal events.

“I had absolutely no idea about the honour until the call came in, and because it was from a number I didn’t recognise, I didn’t answer it at first!” says the former Spalding High School student.
“I couldn’t believe it, I’m so humbled and honoured to receive an MBE – even though it’s been a few days since I found out, it still feels really surreal. I was just so shocked and surprised!
“Once I’d put the phone down, I was wondering what to do, so I video-called my dad and step-mum to share the news with them.”
As well as feeling incredibly proud Sqn Ldr Ingle admits she’s also been overwhelmed by the number of messages of congratulations she’s received since the list was made public.
“My phone was pinging with texts, notifications and WhatsApp messages,” says Sqn Ldr Ingle, who is also a run director at Yarborough Leisure Centre parkrun.
“I was volunteering at a run, and I couldn’t turn it off and everyone kept commenting how busy my phone was!
“It’s lovely to receive the recognition, but I’m a big believe that it’s the people around me, those who support me which enables me to do these things, it’s thanks to their support and to have them saying well done means a lot. I’m very proud.
“My brother made me smile when I told him about the honour. He just replied to say that I’d be able to tell people I’d had a good Christmas, as I’d received some socks, candles - and an MBE!”
Sqn Ldr Ingle’s investiture will take place later this year.
