Solar panels are providing energy for Fosdyke factory

Solar panels are supplying the power for a South Lincolnshire produce factory.

Fresh produce supplier A H Worth has fitted 631KW solar panels on the roof of its Fosdyke factory - which supplies all of the site’s needs during the summer months and 20% during the rest of the year.

The firm grows and supplies a variety of fresh vegetables including cavolo nero, kale and spinach to major retailers.

A H Worth, which has farms in the Holbeach and Gedney areas, also uses a 1.4Mw anaerobic digester to turn crops into enough clean energy to power 2,000 homes.

Maize grown on land surrounding the site is fermented in the AD, to produce a biogas that powers electricity-generating engines. This process also produces nutrient-rich by-products, both liquid and solid, which in turn are returned to the land as natural fertilisers.

Managing director Alex Boughton said: “Sustainability has been a key value at A.H. Worth ever since it was founded in by Arthur Worth in 1895 and we are constantly innovating to create solutions that enable us to provide the quality fresh produce our customers expect, in the ways that respect the environment.

“We are proud to have the potential to power 100% of our sites’ requirements through our current sustainability efforts and look forward to continuing to seek out the most efficient and environmentally friendly solutions.”
