Summer Mace’s meeting with Attorney General fails to bring about appeal over sentencing of Aurelijus Cielevicius

A face-to-face meeting with the Attorney General has failed to bring about an appeal over the sentencing of a drug-driver who killed a Gedney family of three last January.

Just under a year ago, Lynn man Aurelijus Cielevicius ploughed into the family’s car on the A47 at North Runcton, killing them on the spot.

Summer Mace, who lost her sister, mother and step-father in the horror crash, has since launched a petition to change the criminal justice system after feeling Cielevicius was “let off” with less than a decade behind bars.

This led to a meeting with the Attorney General on Monday – but Victoria Mary Prentis KC told her that she will not be reviewing an appeal to make a change.

Summer says she and her father Jason asked for details on how Michael Tomlinson, previously the Solicitor General, was advised when he rejected an earlier appeal.

“We still do not understand why we were not accepted for an appeal when others are, especially considering the amount of aggravating factors and the killing of three innocent people,” Summer said.

“We will continue working with (North West Norfolk MP) James Wild to try and get these answers that we would like. We are extremely disappointed with this outcome as we do believe we have been wronged with this sentence and decision of declining an appeal.

“We feel highly insulted and frustrated by these outcomes.”

The family’s appeal was previously turned down because the judge’s sentence was not deemed to be “unduly lenient”.

Cielevicius was speeding at 96mph when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and crashed into the Vauxhall Mokka containing Paul Carter, 41, Lisa Carter, 49, and Jade Mace, 25.

Their killer had crystal meth, cannabis and mephedrone in his system when he struck them and pleaded guilty to three counts of death by dangerous driving.

A judge handed him a total of ten and a half years in jail, of which he will likely serve just seven, and was banned from driving for 15 years.

Cielevicius was also on a curfew when he killed the family but was not being monitored.
