Gosberton residents introduced to mat bowls at village hall while Spalding, Holbeach and Long Sutton celebrate In Bloom success in 1997

Gosberton residents were thrilled with a new game to play at their village youth centre 25 years ago.

Around 20 visitors were introduced to short mat bowls by members of a Sutterton club, with Roger Machin and John McCartney teaching them the fundamentals.

Youth centre leader Tom Mehew said everybody had a great time - and hoped the sport would take off in the village. He added: “It’s quite good fun and relaxing and would be something to do in the winter.”

Meanwhile, volunteers were being thanked for their efforts back in 1997 after a series of East Midlands In Bloom successes.

Floral prizes were won by groups in Spalding, Holbeach and Long Sutton that year, with the first two taking first prize in their categories.
