Spalding Gleed Girls and Boys and Long Sutton firefighters' fundraising efforts

We are once again taking a step back in time to share pictures from 1994 and 2009.

Boys from Sir John Gleed Technology School did their bit to make Christmas special in a Romanian orphanage. During 1994, they put together Christmas shoe boxes full of goodies and essential items for an orphanage in Chidigeni.

Head of Art, Mandy North, also handed over £100 to go towards the cost of the repair of the orphanage roof.

Spalding’s Gleed Girls School headteacher Mary Moorhouse fasted for 24 hours to support Oxfam in 1994.

She was joined by 200 pupils from the lower school in fasting between 7.45pm Thursday to 7.45pm Friday.

Miss Moorhouse said: “The worst time was on Friday afternoon. I was teaching at the time and felt very hungry.”

Long Sutton’s retained firefighters showed their strength to raise money for Help for Heroes in 2009.

The nine-strong crew raised £2,000 for the charity by pulling a fire engine four-and-a-half miles from Sutton Bridge to Long Sutton.

The team had been inspired by watching a programme on soldiers returning from Afghanistan.
