Grantham furniture store was opened by famous singer
This is Johnny Wallwork's furniture store in Castlegate during the Christmas period of 1972.
The new showroom opened in April 1966 with a local band, featuring Peter Wallwork on keyboards, playing to the crowd al fresco and from on high – pre-dating The Beatles' concert on the roof of Apple Records by three years.
The store was opened by popular singer Frankie Vaughan.
By the 1970s, the building had become quite a large complex and housed variously Status home improvement shop, electronics specialists Tandy, and supermarkets Fine Fare, Food Giant and Kwik Save.
It will also be remembered for its innovative 'underground' car park which was accessed via East Street.
Did intrepid duo make to the start of the Monte Carlo rally?
Pictured here are Harry Watson, of Barrowby, and T.J. Hobb, of Stoke Rochford, at Empire Garage, in Brook Street, where their Ford Classic was prepared for the Monte Carlo Rally in 1963.
The Journal can find no record of how they got on, however, it is known that some competitors did not even make it to the race's start line in Belgrade due to the extreme levels of snowfall that year.
