Royal British Legion Band performance and Spalding Grammar School students run marathon in 1997

More than 120 people braved the threat of rain and thunderstorms to hear the Royal British Legion Band 25 years ago.

Thankfully, the heavens only opened once over Ayscoughfee Gardens during the 15 minute interval, so the selection of popular melodies and marches was enjoyed in ‘very pleasant weather’.

Chairman Robert West said that ‘it’s very nice to have live music back in the gardens - they really are at their best at events like these’ and considered the event ‘very well received’.

Meanwhile, plenty of charities benefited from Spalding Grammar School’s marathon back in 1997.

In weather varying from terrific sunshine to torrential rain, 62 pupils, five staff members and five parents ran, jogged and walked 26 miles from Boston to Skegness.

The funds were distributed between organisers, MacMillan Cancer Support, and Boston and District Sports Council among other charities.

Participant Mr Pebble was glad that ‘most of us finished and raised some money along the way’.
