MEMORY LANE: Grantham pub began as an ironmongery

The Gate House Inn, in Watergate, is pictured in 1987. It later became The Playhouse pub; now closed down and vacant.

Built in the 1760s, the building was formerly Collard’s ironmongers.

In the photo, The Cake Shop next door was still open whilst, on the other side, the former Whipple’s Garage was being reconfigured, to become a Kwik Fit.
