Grantham Journal Memory Lane picture spurs its original photographer to submit more vintage images
Spurred on by our republication of the MG SA photograph a couple of weeks ago, Journal reader Barrie Cox (who actually took the original photo) said the car in question belonged to printing press operator Joe Griggs and was parked outside Palmers Printers, of Bates’ Yard, off Wharf Road.
Barrie said Joe went on to become senior press manager on the Sydney Times.
Palmers Printers had originally been situated on Vine Street where Barrie (below) is pictured as a 15-year-old apprentice in 1951.
He is standing alongside a trusty Cropper Charlton platten printing press.
Barrie also brought in the photo, below, of his father Frank Cox (second from right) working on a tea van at the then newly opened RAF Cranwell in the 1920s.
Frank went on to work at Ruston and Hornsby and is pictured (below) on the far left, during the erection of a new sign and clock on London Road.
