Alton Towers to shut Nemesis and thrillseekeers have just weeks left to ride the rollercoaster until it returns in 2024
Alton Towers has told thrillseekers popular rollercoaster Nemesis will soon be shutting, but all is not as it seems.
People can still book to ride Nemesis until Alton Towers closes for the season - then it's a case of waiting until 2024 when it will reopen following a huge revamp.
Details shared on social media initially made it seem the ride in the the resort's Forbidden Valley would be closing permanently.
In posts to fans it says; "By order of the Phalanx Nemesis is closing. You have until 6th November to ride. Please make your way to Alton Towers Resort in an orderly fashion."
Phalanx is the special organisation assembled to control the alien Nemesis beast by laying the rollercoaster track over it back in 1994.
The park shuts for the season on November 6 with its annual fireworks show. The theme park is expected to reopen in March with refurbishment on Nemesis then underway.
Nemesis cost £10m and was Europe’s first inverted rollercoaster when it opened in 1994. Riders experience 3.5 G-force as they race past the rocks and rivers of the theme park’s Forbidden Valley at speeds of up to 50mph.
The revamp and reopening will coincide with the ride's 30th anniversary.
Kate McBirnie, head of product excellence at Alton Towers Resort, said: “Nemesis is Europe’s first ever inverted rollercoaster, which has been exciting thrillseekers since 1994.
“The legendary rollercoaster is loved by thrillseekers across the UK and beyond, and we want to give fans of the ride the opportunity to experience Nemesis in its current form before it closes on November 6.”
The transformation is due to start this winter. Full details are being kept under wraps for now with more information to be revealed nearer the time.
