Fuel prices on the rise: The best - and worst - places to fill up with petrol and diesel in Lincolnshire

Motorists have been warned there are going to be tough times ahead as pump prices continue to rise.

The cost of filling up a family car has risen by £5 since the start of the year, statistics show.

The average price of petrol across the country was 149.9 pence per litre on April 17, up an eyewatering 10p from three months ago when - on January 18 - the national average was 139.9.

The story is no better for diesel drivers who are paying an average 155.9, six pence higher than the average of 149.9 at the start of the year.

A LincsOnline survey conducted this week discovered that drivers in the county are getting a better deal than many of their fellow countrymen at present - but you may have to hunt in specific places for those bargains.

And a word of warning for anyone planning a long-distance trip, don’t fill up on the A1 as you could end up paying as much as 173.9 for petrol and a whopping 182.9 for diesel.

Surprisingly, one of the cheapest places to fill up this week has been in Spalding, which was one of the most expensive areas when we conducted a similar survey in December.

But yesterday you could fill up for 141.7 at the Essar pumps on London Road (formerly a BP Garage).

That priced was matched at Morrisons in Skegness while the Market Rasen Tesco filling station was charging a competitive 141.9.

Our December survey revealed Bourne was the cheapest place to fill up at the time, costing you just 138.9.

But four months later it’s a very different story as the best deal was 145.9 at the Esso garage, a significant seven pence hike.

You could expect a competitive price in Holbeach where the cheapest offer was 142.9 at the Texaco pumps, while Stamford’s Jet (143.9) and Lincoln’s Asda (144.7) and Sainsbury’s (144.9) also offered better value than their rivals.

In Grantham the cheapest petrol was on offer at Asda (145.7) which was marginally cheaper than Sainsbury’s (145.9).

Bullwinkle’s Garage in Horncastle would set you back 145.8, while the best deals in other towns were 146.7 at Boston Asda, 146.8 at Gainsborough Gulf and 146.9 at the BP garage in Louth.

For those living on the Lincolnshire border, it could often be better value to nip across county lines.

The price of petrol was 141.9 at Peterborough’s Sainsbury’s and the Werrington Tesco, while a penny more at the Boongate BP and Eastfield Road filling station.

Heading north and a stop at Grimsby’s Asda would set you back 144.7, while you’d be paying out a little more at Asda at both Newark and King’s Lynn, both charging 145.7.

In Rutland the cheapest petrol price was 144.9 at both Oakham’s Esso and Pace pumps.

For diesel drivers, the best deal could be found at Market Rasen’s Tesco, which was charging 149.9, an enjoyable six pence below national average.

Louth’s BP garage - one of the priciest petrol spots - was charging 150.9 for diesel.

Lincoln’s Asda (151.7), Spalding’s Essar (152.7), Stamford’s Jet (152.9), Bullwinkle’s at Horncastle (153.8), the Esso at Bourne (153.9), Gulf at Gainsborough (153.9) and the High Street Harvest garage in Boston (154.9) were also selling diesel below the national average.

At Grantham’s Asda you could fill up for 155.7, while the best diesel option in Holbeach was the Fleet Road pace pumps, charging 155.9.

Diesel drivers won’t like to be beside the seaside when they find out they were being charged over the national average at Skegness, yesterday’s best deal being 156.7 at Morrisons, Asda and Tesco.

Again, crossing the border may pay off for some as diesel was priced 151.9 at Peterborough’s Padholme Road Esso and Sainsbury’s, and 152.9 at the Eastfield Road and both Tesco pumps.

Some of the county’s highest prices could be found along the A1.
