‘I hope to see many more like this!’ Parking restrictions ‘with teeth’ introduced outside Lincoln schools
Parking restrictions ‘with teeth’ will be introduced outside two schools.
The traffic orders were approved by Lincolnshire County Council’s planning committee on Monday (March 10).
Our Lady of Lincoln Catholic Primary School on Laughton Way will get mandatory ‘keep clear’ and ‘no waiting’ markings to improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
It currently has an advisory school safety zone which is ‘generally disregarded’, the planning meeting was told, and there have been three injuries in the area in the last five years.
Wooden posts to stop parents and carers from parking on grass verges around the school have instead led to more vehicles on the road.
Similar markings will also be installed outside Bracebridge Infants & Nursery School on Francis Street, also in Lincoln, prohibiting waiting between 8am and 4pm.
The road is a cul-de-sac, which often leads to vehicles that have parked outside to reverse down it onto the busy Newark Road.
Both schemes faced objections from local residents who were worried about the loss of parking spaces and the displacement of vehicles into other streets.
Coun Tom Ashton (Con) said at the meeting: “It’s absolutely important that if we’re to have school safety zones that they need to be enforceable and have teeth.
“Many people complain about parking outside schools, but without a traffic regulation order like this, we have no backup.
“I hope to see many more like this.”
Coun Charlotte Vernon (Con) said: “The current school safety zone is unenforceable. If there have been three reportable injuries, this is very much needed.”
