Investigation continues into alleged mishandling of ashes at Lincoln Crematorium as council makes promise over service

An investigation into the alleged mishandling of ashes at Lincoln Crematorium continues as the council says the facility is still ‘highly performing’.

Lincolnshire Police launched an investigation in July 2024 after reports that a burial went ahead without the deceased’s ashes.

A 46-year-woman and a 39-year-old man who were initially arrested have been released with no further action.

A 53-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and fraud by false representation has been released under investigation.

City of Lincoln Council, who run the crematorium on Washingborough Road, insist that customers still get a “first class service”.

Speaking at the full council meeting on Tuesday (January 21), leader Councillor Naomi Tweddle (Lab) said: “This was exceptionally upsetting for people affected.

“It was dealt with swiftly and comprehensively, and the council was very honest about it.

“The police investigation is still ongoing, so I can’t comment further.

“It is still highly performing, and we are currently recruiting new staff. It is important to rebuild the team.”

Lincolnshire Police say the investigation is ongoing.
