Labour’s Hamish Falconer takes on junior minister role in Foreign Office
Lincolnshire’s newest Labour MP has been appointed a junior minister in the Foreign Office.
Hamish Falconer was elected as the new Member of Parliament following the General Election on July 4 with 18,470 votes, reclaiming the seat lost by Karen Lee in 2019.
He was one of two candidates to oust Conservative MPs in Lincolnshire, with the other being Reform’s Richard Tice in Boston and Skegness.
The appointment was announced on Thursday, with Mr Falconer’s title being Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
He will officially be the Minister for the Middle East and North Africa.
Mr Falconer said he was “honoured” by the appointment, adding: “I will do all I can to make sure Britain plays a leading role in bringing the devastating war in Gaza to an end and working with our partners to bring about a more stable, secure and prosperous region.
“To the people of Lincoln: I was sent to Parliament by you, and I won’t forget that whatever other duties I have, I am here to serve you.”
Following his election, Mr Falconer promised to “fight every day for a more prosperous Lincoln, a fairer Lincoln, a safer city, a revived NHS and a stronger UK in the world”.
He said he would 'never forget' those he was elected to serve.
Mr Falconer has previously served as a diplomat and negotiated the release of hostages from the Taliban in Afghanistan. He is the son of former Blair-era Lord Chancellor Charlie Falconer.
