More than 100 tyres dumped at Greetwell Hollow in Lincoln
A councillor has urged people to take better care of a Lincoln nature reserve after more than 100 tyres were found dumped in it.
They are believed to have been in Greetwell Hollow for several months before being discovered.
Some are stuck between the fencing with the neighbouring industrial estate.
Councillor Martin Christopher (Lib Dem), who represents the area, fears that it may be difficult to clean up the area.
“You can tell from the volume and appearance of the types that they have been there quite a while – possibly three to four months,” he said.
“It’s hidden from view unless you know what you’re looking for, so someone’s been getting away with it.
“It’s a difficult issue to deal with as it’s private land, and seems to be coming from a private commercial property.
“There’s quite a significant amount, so it could be challenging to collect.”
While local authorities are responsible for cleaning up fly-tipping in public spaces, the landowner has to deal with any waste left on their property.
Greetwell Hollow is owned by the Church Commission of England.
Cllr Christopher said: “The Church Commission has been great cleaning up the Hollow in the past, but they shouldn’t have to be.
“Where’s the common respectful behaviour instead of launching rubbish into there?
“I’ve found nappies and all sorts of offensive graffiti there. People need to treat it better.”
The Church Commission has been contacted for comment.
