“It was a very silly mistake!” Louth drink driver crashes into fence after skidding

A drink driver whose vehicle ‘came to a rest on its side’ after skidding says he made a ‘silly mistake’.

Paul Sears was banned from the roads and ordered to pay £569 when he appeared at Boston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (April 24)

Sears was driving his Audi A3 on Marsh Lane, Louth, at 11.20pm on March 29 when the incident occurred.

“He lost control of the vehicle and skidded,” prosecutor Turan Sunat told the court.

“The car came to a rest on its side, causing damage to a fence and hedgerow.”

Mr Sunat said Sears ‘admitted having a drink and that he would be over the drink-drive limit’ when police arrived.

Sears gave a reading of 54 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

“I’m mad at myself. I’ve upset everything at home,” said the remorseful 54-year-old, who was representing himself.

“I was stopping at a friend’s and for some reason I decided to go home, something I’ve never done before.

“!t was a very silly, silly, silly mistake. And a very expensive one.”

Sears, of St Bernards Avenue, Louth, pleaded guilty to drink driving.

He was disqualified from driving for 14 months, which will be reduced by 14 weeks if he completes the drink driving rehabilitation course.

He was also fined £346 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £138 and £85 court costs.
