Oakham Town Council plans August artisan afternoon

A council has announced plans for an August artisan afternoon.

The event will take place at Oakham Market Place on Sunday, August 25.

Coun Sally-Anne Wadsworth told members of an Oakham Town Council meeting on Wednesday (July 10): “There is a cost involved in closing off the road for the afternoon, but we have contingency funds for events such as these, which I think would bring people in from Oakham itself and the outlying villages.

“We would encourage The George and The Lord Nelson pubs to bring their furniture out and onto the road on the area around the market square, which we shall have closed for the afternoon, so that customers can enjoy outdoors afternoon tea.

“We would also like the arts and crafts fair on Giles Street to contact their stall holders so that they too can enjoy an additional date in their diary.

“I don’t want this to be just a food festival – this should be a mixed group of outdoors ‘artisan’ vendors enjoying a Sunday afternoon – hopefully in the sunshine.”

Coun Joyce Lucas wanted to know what plans would be made if it rained.

Coun Wadsworth replied: “They’ll have to go inside! The pubs have an indoors area obviously, and the arts and crafts people have gazebos which provide some cover from the weather.”

Anyone interested in taking part in the event, or want to hold a stall should contact Oakham Town Council at: enquiries@oakhamtowncouncil.gov.uk or call the council on: 01572 723627
