Rutland artists showcase their work
Rutland Lord Lieutenant Dr Sarah Furness officially opened a "taster" exhibition ahead of Rutland Open Studios month which started on Friday, June 1.
The exhibition is taking place at the Rutland County Museum in Oakham and runs until June 16.
It provides a taster for the type of art work that is on display during June and shows off the work of more than 40 artists taking part in this year's Rutland Open Studios month.
Speaking at the opening event on Friday, May 25, Dr Furness said it was not surprising that there was a multitude of artistic talent in Rutland.
"I think it may be an unexpected surprise for visitors thinking of Rutland simply in terms of a rural area," she said. "We are an artistic centre too, as the Open Studios demonstrate."
This is the 12th year that Rutland artists have opened their homes and studios to the public.
"The exhibition surrounding us in the museum is but a taster for all that is on show across the county," said Dr Furness.
"We can see from what is present here that there is an exciting mix of painting, print making, ceramics, sculpture and more - something to delight everybody."
She said what made Open Studios "so very special" was the fact that it gave members of the public a chance to see where and how the art was made.
"Visiting a studio, workshop or home gives an insight into the tastes and passions that are the inspiration for a work," said Dr Furness.
"It makes for greater understanding and appreciation. It is a real privilege."
Rutland Open Studios chairman Mo Gardner said most artists participating in the Open Studios month had submitted a few pieces of work for the public to view at the exhibition.
"The idea is to give people a chance to view the work of the artists taking part and help them decide on which work they'd like to see more of and where they can go," Mo said.
Running throughout June, members of the public are invited to visit the workshops of participating artists.
