Free boxing through bereavement course heading to North Luffenham in Rutland
A free course to combat grief through boxing and exercise is to return next month.
The Release Programme aims to help the bereaved acknowledge and process grief through boxing and will run over eight weeks in North Luffenham.
It was first launched last year by The Loss Project and Raise The Bar Rutland, and is also endorsed by Dying Matters in Rutland.
They believe boxing is a great way for the bereaved to channel feelings of anger, sadness, exhaustion and despair by releasing excess adrenalin and energy, and improving overall health and wellbeing.
The evening sessions are open to anyone aged 18-plus, of any abilities, with no previous boxing or fitness experience needed.
The 75-minute sessions are non-contact and take place at St Georges Barracks from March.
They aim to give participants the chance to try boxing and get fit alongside mindfulness techniques and other ways of exploring responses to grief.
A participant from last year’s Rutland group said: “Joining this group has been a game-changer; the team is incredibly supportive, friendly, and positive.
“Being surrounded by such wonderful individuals has made me feel at ease and relaxed. I highly recommend trying boxing as a means of coping with grief and stress; it's truly transformative.
“We were encouraged to talk about what we were going through, if we chose to, but also given the space to be in the moment with our thoughts through focus on the activity.
“This course has given me a more positive outlook on myself and gave me the opportunity of meeting others with shared experiences.”
