Lordship of the Manor of Manton title for sale in Rutland

Have you ever felt you deserve more in life than the bog standard title of Mr, Mrs, Master or Miss? Well here’s your chance to give your social status a boost.

A Lordship of the Manor title is up for grabs for anyone who is willing to part with their hard-earned cash.

Vendors at Manorial Services are marketing deeds for the Lordship of the Manor of Manton for £8,500, having been in the hands of its current owner since 1989.

The title has a long history having previously been owned by the monks of Cluny Abbey, the Talbot and Cromwell families, the Rev Abraham Wright of Oakham and the author of The History of Rutland.

Stephen Johnson from Manorial Services said: “Twenty or 30 years ago people tended to buy these titles so they could show off but these days you’re more likely to find a buyer who either has a connection to the area or to someone who used to hold the title.

“We also get a lot of overseas buyers who are Anglophiles and desperately want their own piece of English history.”

Under English law manors are considered to be incorporeal hereditaments - property without physical being - and their sale has been common practice since Medieval times. The process must be handed by solicitors on both sides to keep everything above board.

Anyone who purchases the title will be able to introduce themselves as Lord or Lady of Manton, and the title can be passed down through the generations. You can even apply to have the title added to official documents such as passports and bank cards.

The full history of the Lordship of Manor of Manton is available online at www.manorialservices.com with details of how to make an offer.

Stephen added: “I’d imagine there are a few dozen lordship titles in Rutland but it’s quite rare for them to become available, so for anyone who has a passion for the county, this is a wonderful opportunity.”
