Uppingham grandfather to cycle around Rutland Water 100 times for Cancer Research UK

A grandfather with terminal cancer is saddling up once again to help others living with the illness.

Three years ago Frank McEwan successfully cycled around Rutland Water 100 times to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

On Sunday he will embark on the same challenge once more.

Frank, from Uppingham, said: “Everyone has a reason to support cancer research so I hope enough people will get involved to raise some money.”

Frank, 77, was first diagnosed with cancer in October 2018 in his thorax, right lung and left kidney. He had most of the lung removed and later his kidney before returning to hospital to have his ruptured diaphragm reattached.

The cancer has since spread and been diagnosed as terminal but Frank has chemotherapy every two weeks to prolong his life.

He hopes to complete three loops of the reservoir each day, clocking up 1,700 miles in total, and expects each 17-mile lap to take around an hour and 10 minutes.

Frank will set off from The Horse and Jockey in Manton on Sunday (June 30). Donations can be made online at www.gofundme.com/f/papas-100-bike-ride-part-2

The name of the challenge, Papa’s 100 Bike Ride Part 2, is inspired by Frank’s nine-year-old grandson Teddy, who will join him on some of the rides.
