Harringworth farmer Sarah Bell shortlisted for Farming Woman of the Year title at the National Women in Agriculture Awards

A livestock farmer who diversified her business with holiday cottages has been recognised for her commitment to the agricultural industry.

Sarah Bell was nominated for the Farming Woman of the Year category at the National Women in Agriculture Awards.

Although she didn’t clinch the title, Sarah was delighted to be nominated for her work as a farmer in Harringworth and as a delegate of the NFU Council.

She said: “Like many other women in agriculture I juggle farming, family, diversification and industry commitments.

“I think it is important to give a little back along the way, as it is all too easy to feel that the policy spinning towards us as farmers is beyond our control.

“Women are so often the ones carrying the burden of this, so it is important that we are in the room in organisations that represent us as farmers to ensure that our perspective is offered.

“While sometimes it feels that you don’t make a difference, a lot of the time you do, even without realising it, either by being a welcoming face, offering an alternative perspective or by being the person that proves to others they too can make a difference.”

Sarah works in her family business, Scott and Scott Ayston Ltd, and sells homegrown beef, lamb and venison products through the Castle Chase Foods brand. She also runs Castle Chase Cottages at Ayston.

NFU spokesperson Jane Bassett said: “The work and knowledge that Sarah does is outstanding. Not only that, she is always there to help others with knowledge, support and encouragement.

“We are pleased that she has had the recognition she deserves.”

Dairy farmer Abi Reader was named Farming Woman of the Year during a ceremony in the House of Commons.
