‘I‘m flabbergasted!’ MBE for man who dedicated 60 years to youth and disability sailing in Rutland and Leicestershire
A volunteer who has dedicated decades to helping youngsters enjoy sailing said he was ‘flabbergasted’ to be awarded an MBE.
Colin Magee co-founded the Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing Association in 1967, and has been a tireless promoter of the sport.
His gong was presented for services to young people and to people with disabilities in King Charles’ Birthday Honours List.
“I’ve always sailed. I spent time in the Navy. I’ve never left water - I wouldn’t leave it alone,” said Colin, who turns 83 next month.
“I’ve always done this as a volunteer. But I’m flabbergasted.”
Colin added he always felt ‘very proud’ hearing of his former pupils’ success in life, but says that offering them worthwhile pastimes and life skills was always his aim.
“Anything that keeps a child of the street corner and away from drugs is important. And we can be doing something good and useful and turning them into good citizens, it’s what it’s about.
“Some of the people I have worked with are now all over the world. Some have actually reached the ranks of First Officers on merchant ships, private ships.
“Quite a few have gone on to be doctors and they’ve taken what we’ve taught and how we’ve worked with them, and the attitudes, they’ve carried that with them throughout their lives.”
Colin spent eight years in the Navy reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
“Everything Colin’s done he seems to rise to the top in, even in martial arts, which he enjoyed when he was younger,“ said wife Jill, who is secretary of the association.
“I’m extremely proud. For nearly 60 years I’ve been a sailing wife and it is very well deserved.
“I know how much time and energy he has put into this.”
