The Wheatsheaf pub is Oakham is a Rutland Camra award-winner




A town pub has been voted the winner in a competition run by real ale drinkers.

Rutland Camra (Campaign for Real Ale) awarded The Wheatsheaf in Northgate, Oakham its ‘Pub of the Season’ title.

The Wheatsheaf was selected from a short list of three out of 53 pubs in the county.

Scores were given by Camra members for the quality of the beers being served in the pubs and the Rutland branch then voted for a winner.

Also on the shortlist was The Captain Noel Newton in High Street, Oakham, and the Vaults in Uppingham.

A Rutland Camra branch spokesperson said there is always strong competition to make the short list, and and all three pubs should take great pride in achieving a place.

They added: “As a county we should be very proud of these great community assets and take full advantage of what they have to offer. Pubs are very much part of the tourist economy, offering employment to many, using local produce in their restaurants, and selling local beer in their bars.”

Rutland Camra is open to all and holds an annual beer festival in Rutland County Museum in Oakham. This year the festival will run from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23. More information is at www.rutland.camra.org.uk.

It also holds social meeting and trips to other towns and cities to sample their pub life.
