Crime and policing to be discussed at meeting in Uppingham

People will have the chance to grill the police and crime commissioner at a meeting tomorrow night (Wednesday, April 30).

Uppingham residents can also put questions to the town council’s chairman and receive an update on Uppingham Library improvements from county council officers.

Town clerk Adam Lowe said police and crime commissioner Rupert Matthews had been invited in response to worries about crime.

He said: “Some members of the public raised concerns about anti-social behaviour and possible drug taking in the town, which they wanted to raise with the police and crime commissioner."

He added that they encourage residents to attend, as it is their one opportunity in the year to ask whatever questions they like.

"There is no agenda and it will be a no holds barred meeting," he said, adding that council chairman David Ainslie ‘knows his onions’ and would be happy to answer questions.

The town meeting being held from 6pm at the council’s offices in High Street East, Uppingham.

The library in Queen Street is one of three Rutland libraries due to be improved. The county council has a tender out for the work, valued at £780,000 with £280,000 set aside for the Uppingham works. They include installing new curtain walling and an entrance as well as an access ramp. The public venue will also have a new kitchen, accessible toilets and family hub room. The flat roof will be repaired and new external decoration.
