A new May Queen was crowned at a traditional Bank Holiday celebration that attracted hundreds of visitors.

Lily Mann became queen of Braunston-in-Rutland at its May Day fair on Monday, with her attendants Grace Thomas and Ada May.

Lily, who is 13 and in Year 8 at Uppingham Community College, said she was proud to have been crowned after three years of being in the running for the position.

“When I tried on the dress it fitted perfectly and was just the right length,” said Lily, who lives in nearby Knossington.

“I was given a pretty necklace to keep and some lovely flowers, and I feel super-proud and really happy to have been chosen this year.

“It’s something I will remember.”

As well as the crowning of a new queen, the event offered entertainment in the form of Rutland Big Band, who performed on an outdoor stage provided by local logistics firm PC Howard, and Rutland Youth Dance Academy.

There was maypole dancing, a display of classic cars, lots of stalls and refreshments, and a dog show with classes that included waggiest tale, best sausage catcher, and dog most like their owner.

The village hall sold teas and homemade cakes, while the village hall garden was full of funfair games, such as ‘splat the rat’ and a coconut shy.

All Saints’ Church was transformed into a mini craft market, while the Blue Ball pub played music and served drinks in the beer garden.

Money raised from the fair will support All Saints’ Church repairs, and a local branch of riding for the disabled.
