Santa and his reindeer visited Christmas fair in Uppingham

Reindeer, carols and plenty of shopping set a festive mood in a town.

Uppingham Market Place was packed with stalls selling gifts and food on Thursday evening (December 7) for the annual late night shopping and lights switch on event.

It’s been months in the making and not even a heavy downpour of rain could ruin the plans.

Paula Donaldson, organiser, said: “I’m really pleased with the way it went.

“I started working on it in March and I’m still wrapping stuff up now, like the raffle prizes and elf on the shelf competition we ran.”

After the lights were switched on the Corby Silver Band played Christmas tunes, which made a ‘big difference’ to the atmosphere, and there was street theatre involving cheeky elves.

The popular Christmas reindeer also returned and children lined up to visit Santa in his grotto.

It is expected that throughout the evening about 1,500 people visited.

The lights had been turned on earlier in the week in Oakham.

“It is a great local event which we know people wait for every year,” said Paula.
