Sewage spills into Eye Brook in Caldecott, Rutland as a result of wet weather

Sewage has been spilling into a waterway as a result of the extreme wet weather.

Anglia Water shows an incident with the Eye Brook in Caldecott as the only one in Rutland, however more could follow if the conditions continue.

Storm overflows are permitted during extreme weather conditions to prevent sewers from becoming overloaded, acting as the pressure release that allows floodwater to escape into a river or the sea and not back up into people's homes.

The Eye Brook spill began at just after 5am this morning and has been running for more than 11 hours.

Over the border in Northamptonshire there are spills at Gretton and Stoke Albany into the River Welland and at Middleton into the Middleton Brook with Leicestershire spills at Market Harborough, Glooston, Tugby and Tilton on the Hill.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “We’ve heard loud and clear from our customers, communities, passionate river groups and our regulators that we need to take action to address storm overflows.

"We agree that storm overflows are no longer the right solution when sewers become overloaded with rainwater, and have a plan to address how we tackle them.

"The next stage of that is a proposal for £1bn of investment into directly tackling storm spills as part of our next business plan, totalling £9bn, which we're currently discussing with Ofwat."
