For Rutland fundraising group brings in £47,000 at Good and New Clothing Sale at Rutland Showground in Oakham

Hundreds of shoppers have done their bit to support the community and the environment by attending a secondhand clothing sale.

Volunteers from the For Rutland fundraising group hosted the Good and New Clothing Sale at Rutland Showground over the weekend.

More than 70 rails of pre-loved designer clothes and high street brands were available to buy at bargain prices, with all profits helping to fund two non-medical advisers at Citizens Advice Rutland.

Around 300 people attended the preview on Friday evening, enjoying champagne and canapes from Hambleton Hall and a first look at the items on offer. On Saturday, 320 people shopped at the half-price sale.

Organisers took more than £47,000 from clothes sales, raffle tickets and refreshments across the two days.

Chairperson of For Rutland, Jeanette Warner, said: “We are incredibly grateful for all the support we receive from the local community, from our sponsors old and new, our shoppers and especially our volunteers.

“Without the support of all these wonderful people we would not be able to hold such a fantastic event which raises funds for this amazing service.”

Jeanette had previously said she was amazed at people’s willingness to donate with apps like Vinted now promoting sustainable shopping.

Rutland has been home to the secondhand clothing sale for more than 50 years. The event historically raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support but For Rutland was launched in 2014 and took over the organisation. The group works to raise £80,000 each year to fund two advisers at Citizens Advice Rutland in Oakham.

In the past decade the advisers have helped people with long-term health conditions to recoup more than £9million in benefits, grants and debt write offs.

For Rutland’s next fundraising event will be a bottle tombola at the Rutland Show on Sunday, June 2.
