Rutland County Show celebrates its 190th anniversary

An after-show party has been added to the line up for this year’s Rutland County Show as it reaches its 190th anniversary.

It is already thought to be one of the biggest one-day shows in the country and this year organisers have promised it will be “bigger and better”.

Chairman of Rutland Agricultural Society, David Wood, believes the organisers have found a winning formula which will be enhanced by a bigger farmyard area for children, a larger catering area with shelter from the weather - good or bad - and the after-show party.

He said: “People can expect more of what they are used to but bigger and better. The show has a long history and we find people want to come back year after year.”

Attractions include a dog show with prizes for the prettiest bitch, most handsome dog, cutest puppy, golden oldie, best young handler, best rescue, best six legs and best in show. Entry on the day is £2 per class or three classes for £5.

People can also get a glimpse at the emergency services in the blue light zone with displays from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue, Leicestershire Police, the community safety team, East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme and the Leicestershire and Rutland Blood Bikes.

Elsewhere on the showground visitors can have a go at a bike track, climbing and archery. There will also be a sheep show, vintage farm machinery, giant tortoises and craft demonstrations.

Music performances include Stellify Music at midday, Jake Wells at 1pm, Ben Needle at 2pm and Eaga Gospel Choir at 3pm.

The fundraising group For Rutland will host a bottle tombola and is appealing for donations. Anything in a bottle from shampoo to champagne can be dropped off at the village shops in Barrowden, Edith Weston, Market Overton, Ketton and Empingham, The Fox in North Luffenham, Cottesmore Post Office, The Jackson Stops in Stretton, John Porter Dry Cleaners in Oakham and Nelsons in Uppingham by May 28.

This year’s Rutland County Show takes place on Sunday, June 2 at the Rutland Showground in Oakham from 9am until 5pm. Tickets in advance cost £12.50 for adults and £2 for under 16s plus a booking fee from www.rutlandshowground.com or £14.50 and £2 on the gate. Entry is free for children under four.

Tickets for the after-show party cost £5 and must be purchased in addition to a daytime ticket.
