Oakham War Memorial cleaned up in time for VE80 and VJ80 commemorations

A group which looks after a town war memorial has dipped into its funds to get the monument gleaming in time for landmark Second World War anniversaries.

In preparation for the 80th anniversary commemoration of VE Day (Victory in Europe) and VJ Day (Victory in Japan), Oakham War Memorial has been cleaned by a monument management business.

The work was organised by Oakham Memorial Institute (OMI) who also funded the work.

Institute chairman Adam Lowe said they chose to use their own funds after Oakham Town Council turned down a request.

He said: “Having received messages from families connected to names on the monument being unreadable, we chose to use OMI funds of £2,200 needed to bring this memorial, to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, back to a standard where there names can again be seen and read aloud.”
