Oakham United are beaten by Deeping Rangers Reserves in the Peterborough League Premier Division

The stop-start nature of their season continues to hamper Oakham United's progress.

The Rutland side have managed to play just two games in the Peterborough League Premier Division in the last six weeks.

They had another three-week wait between matches before returning to action on Saturday when they went down to a 2-1 home loss to Deeping Rangers Reserves.

The visitors netted a last-gasp winner to send Oakham to a fourth successive defeat with manager Lea Jordan now trying to rally his troops to kick-start their season after what had been a promising opening to the campaign with a regular run of games.

He said: "Game-time hasn't really worked out for us in the last couple of months and you can see that in the performances.

"We haven't been sharp because training and playing is two different things and, when you can't get the minutes in, it does punish you.

"We certainly haven't been ourselves recently. We've been missing opportunities, not defending in the right areas and losing the ball too quickly.

"The momentum just hasn't been there and the run of weeks without a game does kill your confidence because we had started out so well.

"The boys now need to dig deep because it's almost like we're starting from scratch again."

Oakham had availability issues for Saturday's match at Newton Fallowell Meadow as striker Jamar Dobson and Tyrell Campbell-Smith were both absent.

Ed Sakovich was pushed up front along with Michael Uff whose reliable presence was missed in the Oakham back-line.

The hosts did begin well and Sakovich was thwarted by a good save in a one-on-one before Deeping took the lead after a fortuitous penalty decision.

Oakham were then awarded a spot kick of their own when Sakovich was brought down and Stewart Lambie converted to send the sides in level at half-time.

Chances came and went for both sides in an end-to-end second half with Deeping riding their luck after escaping a potential red card when their goalkeeper appeared to handle the ball outside his box, however, Oakham's appeals were waved away.

Oakham continued to probe for a winning goal with Uff missing a chance in a one-on-one before Deeping struck a last-gasp winner as Luke Woodhouse netted his second goal of the game.

Jordan added: "We are lacking confidence at the moment and the players are a bit down in the dumps but we just need to roll our sleeves up and work that bit harder.

"The lack of games has cost us massively but we need to bounce back. The players need to keep believing in themselves so we can go again because, once we get the next win, then I think we'll be fine."

Oakham return to action on Saturday, January 6, when they host Crowland in the Peterborough Senior Cup.
