Oakham School are successful at the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens tournament

Oakham School are celebrating a double success at the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens tournament.

The Under 14 Girls' rugby team were runners-up in the cup competition while the Under 16 boys' brought home silverware to Rutland after winning the Plate event.

It was an amazing achievement for the Under 14 girls given that some members of the team had only played their first competitive sevens match on the morning of the tournament.

The team were just the second cohort of Oakham School girls rugby players to compete at the famous sevens festival.

2023 was the first year that Oakham had fielded a female sevens team, which makes their achievement this year even more remarkable.

Director of rugby, Rupert Harden, said: "This was an absolutely amazing effort from the girls.

"They returned to Rutland as second in the country after only losing the final by one point.

"It shows a very promising future for this team and for girls’ rugby at Oakham School."

Two days after the girls’ success, Oakham's Under 16 boys’ team began their sevens campaign, which culminated in them winning the Plate.

Over two highly competitive days the boys competed superbly, topping their group on day one and beating Stowe 20-0 in the final.

Harden added: "To claim silverware at this national tournament is a massive achievement for the boys.

"They have only lost one of the 20 games they have played this sevens season.

"With several players in the squad also members of Oakham Rugby Club, these boys have a great track record of playing together. I look forward to seeing how they progress at senior level next year."
