Oakham School cross-country runner Beth Griffiths wins a silver medal at the UK Inter Counties event
Competing in a total of nine races during the England cross-country running season became a remarkable achievement for teenage athlete Beth Griffiths.
The promising 13-year-old star runner ended the final fixture of the 2024/25 campaign on a high note by winning a silver medal in her age group at the UK Inter Counties event.
She secured the second spot in the 1.9-mile race with a time of 12:05.
Beth - who is member of Corby Athletic Club and represented the Leicestershire and Rutland County team - was edged out for gold by the speedy Madison Kindler of Essex who triumphed in a time of 11:58, while Elizabeth Hutchings of Avon and Somerset got the bronze in 12:13, writes Geshom Nyathi.
Bill Boyd - who coaches both juniors and senior athletes at Corby AC - praised the Oakham School athlete who is not new to getting podium places.
He said: "Beth is outstanding.
"She is very keen and works hard to become a good athlete.
"It is a good achievement in thatshe has featured in a total of nine races in this year's cross-country season."
Among other competitions where the teenage runner was out in action included the national cross-country relays in Mansfield as well as Leicestershire and Rutland and Midlands cross-country championships.
Beth's participation at the UK Inter Counties was a result of having been recognised by a panel of selectors who chose her to be part of the Leicestershire and Rutland team.
She got decorated with a medal around her neck in what was a family affair for the Griffiths'.
Brother William raced in the Under-17 men's 3.7 miles event, finishing 87th out of 290 runners in a time of 21:01.
As the cross country season has just unfolded, Boyd is hopeful that his squad of runners, including Beth, will now show up in track and competitions.
