Uppingham Town returned to winning ways on Saturday after back-to-back defeats.

The reigning Peterborough League Premier Division champions were 3-0 home winners over Netherton United at Tod's Piece.

Josh Porter, Jordan Neil and an own goal compiled the Town tally to maintain top spot in the table.

Town started well and created the first chance that Rob Forster headed over from close range following Luke Gove's cross.

Netherton responded and fired a shot just wide of the home goal before Town goalkeeper Tom Hubbard made a good save down to his left, tipping the ball around the post for a corner from a shot just outside the box.

Town then took the lead when Netherton scored an own goal from a corner before coming close to doubling their advantage.

Forster shot over at the back post from a Neil cross before Robbie Pearce did well out wide but his cross was side-footed wide by Forster.

The second goal arrived after half-time when Forster did well out wide and his pass found Neil just outside the box.

His shot was brilliantly saved by the Netherton goalkeeper but Porter followed up to finish into the roof of the net.

Neil then shot just wide when well placed from a Forster cross before Town sealed the win with a third goal.

Martin Turiccki went on a good run and released Neil with a through ball and he went around the keeper to score into an empty net.

Netherton came close to a consolation late on when a header from a corner went just wide but they were unable to find a way back into the contest.

Town boss Paul Sheehan said: "I was pleased with the result and most of all the performance.

"It was too much end-to-end football in the first 20 minutes and we gave Netherton a few openings. It was a case of we attacked and they attacked.

"After this period, we took control of the game and created a lot of chances and on another day we could have scored a lot more.

"It was nice to get a clean sheet again as it's been too long since we last had one."

Town now face a trip to second-placed Warboys Town on Saturday.

The Witches are four points adrift of Uppingham but have three matches in hand.
