Alford 71-year-old Mick Culley takes on 215-mile cycling challenge for Lincolnshire charity Headway who supported him after ruptured aneurysm left brain injury

A man who was left with a serious brain injury on holiday has raised more than a thousand for charity.

Mike Culley, 71, was visiting family in Wiltshire when he was rushed to Southampton Hospital with a ruptured aneurysm at the end of May 2021.

He had lifesaving operations to relieve the pressure on his brain from hydrocephalus and to coil the aneurysm and his life was left in the balance for some ten days.

It took between 12 and 18 months for the man from Alford to recover, though it became apparent that he would never get back to how he was before.

At this stage, the couple contacted Headway Lincolnshire, a charity that works to improve life after brain injury by providing vital support and information to those affected.

“Headway has been really supportive ensuring Mick accessed the help and support he needed,” Kerry added.

She said before seeing the charity he was frustrated, anxious, and was met with the feeling of worthlessness as he was unable to process thoughts and lost the ability to reason as he could before

“He has now received support from a neuropsychologist, neurologist and psychologist,” she added.

To say thank you, Mick raised £1600.09 through a sponsored solo adventure where he cycled 215 miles from Southport to Hornsea.

Mick said: “Throughout my brain injury journey, my wife Kerry and I have been fortunate to receive incredible support from Headway Lincolnshire.

“They have been helping us navigate the changes and rebuild our lives.

“The impact they have had on us is immeasurable, and we are forever grateful for their unwavering support.”

Kerry and their dog Angel-Joy, travelled alongside Mick in a Motorhome to act as lodgings at each stop and to track Mick’s progress, giving him directions and moral support throughout his journey.

He put his success down to the support of his family, friends and church back home.
