Construction of Maplethorpe’s new Station Leisure and Learning Centre reaches important milestone with new £12 million facility to open this summer

Construction of a town’s new leisure centre has reached an important milestone as it enters its final stages of completion.

Work to build Mablethorpe’s Station Leisure and Learning Centre on the site of the current Station Sports Centre began in March 2023, and a year on, a topping-out event has marked the £12 million project’s progress so far.

Those attending were given a tour of the site which included the four-lane, 25-metre swimming pool which will be open with the rest of the amenities this summer.

“This fantastic facility will truly be transformational in improving the health and wellbeing opportunities for people of all ages in Mablethorpe and the surrounding area,” said Coun Richard Fry of East Lindsey District Council.

In addition to the pool, the centre will have a changing village, modern fitness suite, Tag Active (adventure play) studios, new outdoor play area, and will provide new learning and skills opportunities.

Coun Fry added: “For many years, a public swimming pool for Mablethorpe has been a long-desired wish from residents in the town.

“I am delighted that East Lindsey District Council, working with Magna Vitae and the Connected Coast Board has been able to deliver this with a fantastic four-lane, 25-metre pool as well as a new fitness suite and other facilities.

“Station Leisure and Learning Centre will take away the need for residents to travel out of town to access a swimming pool, as well as increasing the opportunities for people of all ages to learn to swim and to improve their health and wellbeing through fitness and social activities.

The project was made possible by East Lindsey District Council’s successful bid for Government Levelling Up funding through the Towns Fund, which saw £7.4m awarded and supported by the Connect Coast Town Deal Board.

“The leisure centre, combined with the other Town Deal projects being delivered in Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea, marks a huge investment for this area of East Lindsey alone,” said Coun Fry.

“In 2021, Mablethorpe secured £23.9m in Town Deal funding from the government to deliver an ambitious vision which will bring significant and sustainable improvements to support a healthy and diverse economy.”

A farewell event to mark the last day of the current Station Sports Centre will be held on Thursday, April 11, from 4pm- 7pm, with demolition works set to take place some time after.

Community activities are being arranged to ensure people have access to facilities during the short closure, and Station Sports Centre members will have access to other Magna Vitae facilities in Louth, Skegness and Horncastle during the short closure to enable them to continue their health and wellbeing journey.
