Mablethorpe Coastguards warn visitors to be cautious after an unexploded bomb washed up on the beach
Coastguards have warned visitors to be mindful of objects on the beach - after a controlled explosion was needed to get rid of an unexploded bomb.
Mablethorpe Coastguards revealed that the bomb had been washed-up on the shore on Monday (April 22) - and a military bomb disposal unit attended to carry out a controlled explosion on the main beach.
Lincolnshire Police officers were also on the scene and the area was cordoned off before four crews from the bomb disposal unit arrived.
A spokesman said: “Always be mindful of objects you may discover on our beaches.
“Our shores are filled with history, but remnants from the past can still sometimes wash up on our shoes today. If you find something on the beach that’s an unusual size or shape, especially if its rusty, it could be an unexploded ordnance – please don’t touch it or move it.”
A social media post also gave information for what to do if you think you may have found a bomb. It explains that although it is rare, bad weather and high tides can expose the objects which come in all shapes and sizes.
If you do come across something on the beach which looks suspicious or you suspect it could be an unexploded bomb, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
