A new car for £800, a diamond ring for £30 and 'junior females' sought after - adverts from the Spalding Guardian of 1972
For a bit of Friday fun, we thought we'd look through our archives and back to the Spalding Guardian of 50 years ago – which came out on March 24, 1972.
It's usually news and photos grabbing our attention when we run nostalgia features, but today we thought we'd look at some of the adverts gracing our pages back in the early Seventies.
It was great seeing adverts for shops that we still know and love, and from those no longer here, but also fascinating to see that a diamond ring could be purchased for £30, a new car for £800 and a bottle of whiskey for £2.57. And if you thought things were too expensive, the Guardian was giving away vouchers for 2p off garden peas and 3p off ice cream.
A 13" colour TV, however, retailed at £200, probably more than a similar set would cost today.
Some of the adverts wouldn't be deemed politically correct nowadays either, with 'junior female clerk,' 'young female shop assistant' and 'lady cashier' all wanted for employment.
Tomblings in Winsover Road was offering a free gents watch with every Hoover vacuum cleaner purchased, and we were particularly pleased to see an advert for Gold Cross Shoes at Revills, now the home of the Spalding Guardian and Lincolnshire Free Press.
