Man who admitted sexually abusing girl in Spalding area is jailed for nine years

A man who admitted sexually abusing an under-age girl in the Spalding area was today (Monday June 23) jailed for nine years.

Daniel Brundell, now of Lode Avenue Bungalows in Upwell near Wisbech was also made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order which limits his contact with female children and use of the internet.

Brundell had been due to stand trial at Lincoln Crown Court in April.

But the 60-year-old pleaded guilty to five charges on the morning of his trial before a jury was sworn in.

The offences included four charges of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity and one charge of sexual assault.

Caroline Bradley, prosecuting, said there was a strong element of grooming by Brundell during the offences which began when his victim was under-age.

"There was physical and psychological abuse," Miss Bradley explained.

Miss Bradley told the court Brundell's victim recalled crying and trying to fight him off.

In her impact statement the victim explained she suffered with anxiety which had been made worse by the abuse.

Steve Taylor, mitigating, told the court Mr Brundell now had severe problems with his bladder and kidney.

Mr Taylor said it was likely that Mr Brundell would need dialysis or a kidney transplant at some point in the future.

"He accepts responsibility for what he has pleaded guilty to," Mr Taylor added.

Passing sentence Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight told Brundell it would have been clear the impact his abuse was having on his victim.

"You initially pleaded not guilty," Judge Sjolin Knight stressed.

Brundell will also now have to register as a sex offender with Lincolnshire Police for the rest of his life.

A restraining order was also made which prevents Brundell from having any contact with his victim.
