Nigel Pepper and Jan Whitbourn call for action on speeding on A1175 through Deeping St Nicholas

Speeding offences in a village are often committed by locals - and calls have been made for more volunteers to halt them in their tracks.

Concerns have been raised about cars racing along the A1175 through Deeping St Nicholas in recent weeks.

One resident described some drivers in the village as ‘frightening’ on a Facebook post - particularly when they ‘hurtle along past youngsters on their way to school’.

And Coun Nigel Pepper, who represents the village on South Holland District Council, says the problem has been ongoing for a long time.

He said that during his four decades in the fire and rescue service at Crowland, he ‘attended many serious road traffic collisions at various points along the long main road through Deeping St Nicholas, in many of these speed was a contributory factor’.

He added: “Speeding is an issue in all our villages and it’s disappointing when you look into these matters that more often than not it is local motorists that are the ones speeding.”

Jan Whitbourn, police volunteer coordinator for Community Speedwatch in South Holland, echoed those worries.

She and Coun Pepper both believe more people need to step up and help other volunteers if they are to slow vehicles down.

She said: “People have got to realise that very often the people that are speeding live in the village.

“When people see Speedwatch out there, the next day the people that have seen them are looking for them - even if they’re not there.

“The idea is not to give them a ticket - the idea is to stop the speeding. It’s about trying to slow people down.”
